Hidden between volcanoes and in the forests of Gran Nicoya (Central America) resides a community, which has been making ceramics since many thousands of years. When the Spaniards discovered the site in 1503, they were in awe and deeply impressed by the sheer quality and beauty of these ceramics. Since then, art historians and connaisseurs regard the ceramic pieces originating from this region among America’s very best.

The tradition of ceramic-manufacturing has continued to exist and evolve until the present day. From the 90’s onwards, most ceramists have switched from producing utensils to creating art pieces in their own right. The superior quality, originality and pureness of the objects didn’t remain unnoticed. Since then, the greatest talents are represented in major museums worldwide. The most intricate and elaborate objects featuring infinately varying geometrical and nature inspired patterns continue to mesmerise peple from around the globe.

Today, at Pura Vida Interior you will find te most recent artworks from the greatest talents, such as Helio Gutierrez, José Ortiz, Santiago Gutierrez, Miguel Maldonado, Roberto Carlos López, Santiago Gutierrez, Bismarck Ortiz, Jacobo Potosme, Enmanuel Sanchez, Dalia and Joel Ortiz. Each with their own unique style and always different!

ILLUMINATION IN COLOUR Our gallery at Korte Vijverberg 2 in The Hague is DAILY open from 12 until 5 PM! To enlighten the dark days leading up to Christmas, Pura Vida Interior curates a major exhibition featuring novel intricately handcrafted design-lamps by renown Indian artista Ashok Bhadra, as well as the Nicaraguan artists José Ortiz and Enmanuel Maldonado. Additionally we are pleased to present new playfully colourful objects by Enmanuel Sanchez and Omar and José Ortiz. A collection of magistral allure, showing ceramics and handmade design-lamps of a rare and outstanding quality over 3 floors at the heart of The Hague.

A WORLD OF COLOURS A New Year A New Beginning Pura Vida Interior proudly presents a completely new collection of ceramics on which our artists have been working with relentless focus and dedication during the past year. They created over a 1000 different designs, shapes and colours. During the coming 6 weeks they will be shown, together with the works of Dutch mixed media artist DOMINIC in 5 rooms and 3 floors in our gallery at Korte Vijverberg 2 in The Hague and there is ample space and adequate ventilation to ensure a safe and tranquil environment to enjoy the show. We are open from Wednesday until Sunday from 11 till 5 PM and on appointment.

GESCHIEDENIS VAN HET KERAMIEK VAN GRAN NICOYA

Pura Vida Interior vertegenwoordigt een aantal vooraanstaande keramisten uit Midden-Amerika. Het afgelopen decennium hebben deze kunstenaars internationaal furore gemaakt en zijn hun stukken in diverse musea in Europa en op tentoonstellingen in de Verenigde Staten geëxposeerd. Wij vertegenwoordigen onder andere werk van José Ortiz Bracamonte, Miguel Maldonado Gaitán, Gregorio Bracamonte Nicoya, Santiago Gutierrez en Helio Guitterez.

Alle keramisten komen uit Gran Nicoya. Dit is van oudsher de regio ten noorden van Costa Rica en het zuidelijk gedeelte van Nicaragua. Hier wordt al ruim 2000 jaar keramiek gemaakt nog steeds van generatie op generatie.

De Indiaanse volkeren die hier voor de komst van de Spanjaarden woonden (o.a. de Chorotega’s) zijn nooit overheerst geweest door de Maya’s of Azteken, maar hun kunst werd zeker wel beïnvloed door deze volkeren. De precolombiaanse kunst uit Gran Nicoya, de kunst die gemaakt werd voor de komst van de Spanjaarden, is weinig bekend maar van een heel hoog niveau. Bijzonder zijn de “jaguars”. De jaguar leeft in de jungle in Midden-Amerika en is altijd vereerd geweest vanwege zijn moed en kracht en kent geen vijanden. Heden ten dagen maakt Gregorio Bracamonte Nicoya moderne, spectaculaire versies van de “jaguar”. Oorspronkelijke versies zijn nu te bewonderen op het vulkanisch eiland Ometepe en in Mi Museo in Granada in Nicaragua.

Het keramiek wordt nog op geheel traditionele wijze gemaakt en daarmee zetten deze kunstenaars een traditie voort, die al bestond voordat Columbus Amerika ontdekte.
